چکیده

A comprehensive analysis of electromagnetic (EM) inversion applied to pavement profiling by using a monostatic ground penetrating radar (GPR) is presented. Since in GPR systems using transfers EM (TEM) horns, the antenna is positioned close to the the investigated medium and a strong EM interaction occurs. This effect is taken into account by modeling the antenna with equivalent sources placed on the aperture section and by using an accurate EM modeling within the inversion loop in order to account for the contribution of near-field effects. Experimental results on the antenna modeling procedure and on a pavement profile estimation validate the feasibility of both the calibration and the inverse problem proposed.

Frequency Domain Gpr Signal Forward and Inverse Modelling for Identifying the Subsurface Dielectric Properties

Research has focused on the development of a new integrated approach including ground penetrating radar (GPR) design, GPR signal forward modelling, and GPR signal inversion to estimate the dielectric permittivity and electric conductivity of the shallow subsurface. We propose to use an ultrawide band (UWB) stepped frequency continuous wave (SFCW) radar combined with an offground monostatic tran...

Temporal Monitoring of the Soil Freeze-Thaw Cycles over a Snow-Covered Surface by Using Air-Launched Ground-Penetrating Radar

We tested an off-ground ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system at a fixed location over a bare agricultural field to monitor the soil freeze-thaw cycles over a snow-covered surface. The GPR system consisted of a monostatic horn antenna combined with a vector network analyzer, providing an ultra-wideband stepped-frequency continuous-wave radar. An antenna calibration experiment was performed to f...

Advanced Inversion Techniques for Ground Penetrating Radar

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) systems are nowadays standard inspection tools in several application areas, such as subsurface prospecting, civil engineering and cultural heritage monitoring. Usually, the raw output of GPR is provided as a B-scan, which has to be further processed in order to extract the needed information about the inspected scene. In this framework, inverse-scattering-based a...

Multitarget Detection/Tracking for Monostatic Ground Penetrating Radar: Application to Pavement Prof - Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Transactions on

Monostatic ground penetrating radar (GPR) has proven to be a useful technique in pavement profiling. In road and highway pavements, layer thickness and permittivity of asphalt and concrete can be estimated by using an inverse scattering approach. Layer-stripping inversion refers to the iterative estimation of layer properties from amplitude and time of delay (TOD) of echoes after their detectio...

Estimation of Relative Permittivity of Shallow Soils by Using the Ground Penetrating Radar Response from Different Buried Targets

Combined ground penetrating radar and metal detector equipment are now available (e.g., MINEHOUND, ERA TechnologyVallon GmbH) for landmine detection. The performance of the radar detector is influenced by the electromagnetic characteristics of the soil. In this paper we present an experimental procedure that uses the same equipment for the detection and calibration by means of signal processing...
